SUMMARY:The House on Henry Street Museum
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Smal
l House with a Big Story\n\nThe Henry Street Settlement presents The Hous
e on Henry Street exhibit in our headquarters at 265 Henry Street. This pe
rmanent interactive exhibition illuminates themes of social activism\, urb
an poverty\, and public health from the organization’s founding in 1893
to the present. The National Endowment for the Humanities–funded exhibit
ion takes visitors through the history of the Settlement\, known for its p
ioneering efforts in social service\, health care\, and the arts. Featurin
g voices and images from the Lower East Side\, it illustrates waves of imm
igration to New York and the challenges newcomers faced amid rapid industr
ialization and urban crowding.\n\n\n\n\nTake NYC Ferry's Lower East Side (
LES) route to Colrears Hook to The House on Henry Street Museum. Email Ka
tie Vogel To arrange a tour!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn online exh
ibition and timeline\, launched in conjunction with the exhibition\, pro
vides a captivating virtual tour.  In six chapters\, visitors explore the
Settlement’s early years\, as sweeping change and rising poverty give b
irth to a new breed of social reformers—and move a young nurse to act. A
lso coming soon: A neighborhood walking tour app connects the past to the
present on the Lower East Side.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe House on Henry Street trace
