2020 Brooklyn Waterfront Challenge
Missing your favorite 5k or marathon that’s been postponed until 2021? Worried about social distancing in a crowded pack of runners? The Brooklyn Greenway Initiative’s 2020 Brooklyn Waterfront Challenge, sponsored by NYC Ferry, operated by Hornblower, is the perfect addition to any runner’s socially-distanced fall calendar.
While many races and running challenges are postponed until further notice, the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative has adapted its celebrated annual half-marathon event into a month-long celebration and running challenge that allows New Yorkers from across the five boroughs to explore their city, challenge their friends and family, and rack up the miles this October – all while safely maintaining social distancing and practicing healthy habits to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The 2020 Waterfront Challenge will connect communities across New York by bringing a month-long fitness challenge for runners of all levels from beginner to seasoned marathon runner, allowing everyone to take part at their own pace and on their own schedule. Participants may run or walk the full waterfront distance of 131 miles; half waterfront distance of 65.5 mile or bike 262 miles doubling waterfront length over the course of October. Similar to a marathon, participants can choose to complete the challenge solo, as a team, with family and friends, or even with their pets.
“For this marathon season, we’re excited to organize a race like no other: a month-long journey around Brooklyn’s entire waterfront – all 131 miles of it!” said Terri Carta, BGI executive director.
While participants are encouraged to explore the Brooklyn Greenway’s 131 miles of dynamic modern shorelines, participation in Brooklyn or on the Brooklyn Greenway is not required. Participants are encouraged to take part from the safety and comfort of their communities and perhaps explore the waterfront closest to their favorite running path. Whether you reside near the Astoria promenade, enjoy running along East River Esplanade, can’t get enough of the Harlem River Greenway fresh air walks, enjoy a long run on the city streets, or prefer morning jogs on a treadmill, this 2020 challenge is the perfect opportunity for a socially-distanced challenge.
If you do decide to travel to the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative for a portion of your run, NYC Ferry offers fantastic views of the city and easy access.
